Maarten Warmerdam and Mike Evers created light design for Dutch opera production Caliban. The production was a coproduction by Operafront and Dutch National Opera and was first performed at the Opera Forward Festival in Amsterdam.
Caliban is a chamber opera by the adventurous composer Moritz Eggert, based on the character of the same name from Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. A fairytale about power that raises questions about the monsters of our time.
Challenge for this light design was the combination of transforming the space into different mythical realities while maintaining sufficient focus on characters in the scene. Theatermachine also provided video projection controls for this production.
