GRID – Isabel Nielen explores the phenomenon of optical illusion using abstract light forms.
In collaboration with café restaurant THT, the Lighting Design Institute (iLo) presented the exhibition Artificial Light Paradise, a selection of light installations developed by various Dutch lighting designers and artists. The installations sprout from the designers personal fascinations and focus on the human experience of light.

Artificial Light Paradise reveals the subtle complexity of light. Light is integrated into the stimulus of all the senses. The interaction of light on the human body through the creation of sensory experiences is central. The installations show how artists and designers deal with the immaterial nature of light, the use of colour and movement, and the technical development of this relatively young medium. It is not only the visual result that counts, but the integration with feeling, hearing, smell and taste are equally important.

When viewers look at the GRID installation, they get the impression of movement, changing lines or patterns created by our own eyes and the limits of our perception. The work is inspired by Bridget Riley’s early black-and-white paintings. Just like in optical art, this installation is about the interaction between light and dark, between feeling and seeing.
