MUDAM – After Laughter Comes Tears

Mike Evers has created light design for the exhibition After Laughter Comes Tears by MUDAM – Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg. After Laughter Comes Tears is a performative exhibition and showcases the work of thirty-four artists through a variety of media. From performance art to installation and video. The exhibition is titled after the music track “After Laughter” by American soul singer Wendy Rene.

MUDAM creates a dynamic exhibition space that changes over time to offer visitors a variety of experiences. During the exhibition, artworks are activated through performances or through active participation of visitors. Thus, the audience is part of a performance.

Approach and technology

The exhibition is based on a theatrical approach, and consists of prologue, four acts and epilogue. By having video artworks and lighting scenes change dynamically every hour, the exhibition’s scenography is used as performance art. The transition between acts is designed as an audiovisual sequence that resets the museum rooms for the next act.

To achieve this, installations and sculptures were lit with track-rail fixtures available in the museum. This is complemented by a diffuse top wash lighting throughout the exhibition spaces, that has the ability to change intensity and color. Linear light fixtures were used to accentuate columns in the exhibition spaces. Virtually every lighting fixture is controlled via wireless signal, since the museum does not have signal wiring and did not want to use visible cabling. The central lighting control consists of Visual Productions Cuecores and lighting fixtures are controlled via multiple wireless signal protocols: Casambi, LumenRadio CRMX and Wireless Solution W-DMX.
