In March 2013, Michael Gordon’s ‘Timber’ was played twice with the complete light design by Floriaan Ganzevoort. The piece was first performed at Muziekgebouw aan het IJ in Amsterdam in a Double Bill with Colin Stetson. Just a week after that it was the opening of the Maerz Musik Festival in Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin, Germany.
The piece is performed on so-called simantra’s, pieces of wood of wich the tonality changes regarding the position where they are played and the kind of mallets used. In Timber there is a unique play with overtones that appear to circle around. This idea is the very base of the light design for the piece.

Der Titel weist direkt auf die Klangerzeugung hin: Riesige Holzbalken kommen zum Einsatz, eine Art überdimensionales Marimbafon, wie es in dieser viel simpleren Bauweise in den orthodoxen Kirchen Griechenlands und des Balkans verwendet wurde.
