Limonov

The Bellevue theatre in Amsterdam showed the lunchtime performance ‘Limonov’ by Ulrike Quade Company. It is a performance inspired by the multi facetted life of the Russian writer and dissident Limonov and the country he lives in. Ulrike Quade made a visual puppet theatre performance with three young actors. Four young playwrights, connected to the Tekstsmederij collective, wrote texts for the performance.

Dat de rauwheid en directheid geloofwaardig en adembenemend overkomt is te danken aan de technische crew van de Ulrike Quade Company. Door de regie (Ulrike Quade), dramaturgie (Thomas Lamers), kostuumontwerp (Jacqueline Steijlen), techniek (Jan Sol) en belichting (Floriaan Ganzevoort) wordt niets aan het toeval overgelaten. The fact that the rawness and directness comes across in a believable way, is thanks to the technical crew of the Ulrike Quade Company. Nothing is being left to chance by the director (Ulrike Quade), dramaturg (Thomas lamers), costume designer (Jaqueline Steijlen), technician (Jan Sol) and light designer (Floriaan Ganzevoort).

De krachtig beeldende scènes, met een juiste dosis korte rake monologen en plukjes filosofisch commentaar van vier jonge schrijvers van De Tekstsmederij, verbeelden in grove lijnen Limonovs nooit aflatende strijd. Hij wordt doodgezwegen en beschuldigd van landsverraad door een journalist met een ezelskop. Klap op de vuurpijl is zijn oude moeder. ‘We wilden vrijheid, geen kapitalisme’, moppert ze vanuit de motorkap van het Trabantje. The powerful visual scenes, with the right dose of short, striking monologues and philosophical comments by the four young playwrights of Tekstsmederij, show in broad strokes Limonov never ending fight. He is being hushed and accused of treason by an ass-headed journalist. The icing on the cake is [the puppet of] his old mother. ‘We wanted freedom, not capitalism,’ she grumbles from under the hood of a small Trabant car.
